Criteria for ConsiderationA campus-wide scholarship to support undergraduate research done in collaboration with UW-Madison faculty or staff. Research proposals must have an environmental focus, and applicants must have at least a junior standing at time of application. Apply spring semester to fund work on the project during the summer or following academic year.
Additional CriteriaSelection criteria: quality of the research proposal, originality and intellectual significance of the research, ability of student applicant to carry out proposed research. Applicants must have at least junior status and be planning on graduating after May of the application year in order to apply. Applicants who do not receive a Holstrom Scholarship will be automatically considered for a Hilldale Undergraduate/Faculty Research Fellowship.
Award DescriptionThe student researcher recieves a stipend, and the faculty/staff research advisor also receives a stipend for costs associated with the research (e.g., supplies, faculty or student travel related to the project). If projects have more than one student or one faculty member together, the stipend levels will vary. Up to five Holstrom Scholarships are given each year.
Award RequirementsAward recipients must register for three credits of supervised research, senior thesis or directed study during the summer or academic year following the receipt of the award in May. This must be done prior to graduation. The recipients must also have proposals approved by the Human Subjects and/or Animal Care and Use Committee(s) if they propose to use human or animal subjects. The recipients must also present findings at the Undergraduate Symposium and submit a research report of approximately 500 to 1,000 words upon completion of research. Up to five applicants are awarded the Holstrom each year.
Application ProcessApplication includes 5-page project proposal, letter of recommendation and transcript.
